Kilala bilang host ng GMA-7 News & Public Affairs show na Born To Be Wild ang veterinarian na si Doc Ferdz Recio. Pero ngayon, mas makikilala siya ng publiko bilang "The Boss" sa Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown.
Si Doc Ferdz ang isa sa celebrity castaways ng third season ng reality show na ito na magsisimulang mapanood sa August 30.
SURVIVOR FAN. Bakit siya sumali sa Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown?
"I wanted to join because I'm a fan of Survivor," sagot ng veterinarian-TV host. "Ever since, yung Survivor sa ibang bansa and Survivor dito sa Pilipinas. Nung pinag-iisipan nila at binubuo pa nila, I was already part of Born To Be Wild, I said kung puwede akong sumali. Sasali ako, yung Season 1 pa lang. Then yung Season 2, okay.
"And then, Season 3, tinawagan nila ako. I was on my vacation during that time they called me up and asked me if I'm interested in joining Survivor Philippines Celebrity edition. I thought it was a prank call because I know that they know I want to really badly wanna join. So, sabi ko, 'Who's this?' Tinanong ko kung sino yung tumawag. And when I was already sure na talagang taga-GMA, I immediately said yes 'coz I really want to join.
"More than the three million [cash prize]," patuloy niya, "I wanted to play and be part of it because, you know, this is what I do. And you watch Survivor, you are always amazed with the games and the things that they do there. So I love the challenges, I love the games, that's why I wanted to join."
Nakausap ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) si Doc Ferdz sa ginanap na presscon ng Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown sa Studio 5 ng GMA Network Center kagabi, August 23.
GAINING WEIGHT. Nagpataba raw si Doc Ferdz bago tumungo sa isang isla sa Andaman Sea sa Thailand, kung saan ginanap ang third season ng reality show ng GMA-7.
"I tried to bulk up, pataba talaga. I'm already bulky as it is. I lost a lot. Nagpabigat ako kasi nagbabangko kami ng stories [for Born to Be Wild], e. So, nagpabigat ako, nagpalaki ako before Survivor. And, yeah, you know in a flash, you will lose it all, madaling mawala. Easily, [I lost] mga 15 pounds. Hindi mo naman mame-measure, e. Wala naman kaming way of knowing kung ilan na ang nawala sa amin."
Ige-gain ba niya ulit ang timbang na nawala sa kanya during Survivor?
"No, I don't think so because it's heavy," sagot ni Doc Ferdz. "Also, in my line of work now kasi, kailangan you're always in the mountain, you're swimming, you're diving, and you're always chasing wild animals. So, kailangan medyo magaan ka rin and medyo athletic."
Dahil hirap o kapos sila sa pagkain sa isla during the reality show, naitanong ng PEP kay Doc Ferdz kung ano ang una niyang kinain pagbalik nila sa Maynila.
"Hamburger! Wendy's Baconator because it's two patties, and the cheese is excellent!" bulalas niya.
ADVANTAGE & DISADVANTAGE. May mga nagsasabing dahil isa siyang beterinaryo at host ng Born to Be Wild ay sanay siya sa mga hayop at kagubatan, kay may advantage siya sa iba niyang kalabang celebrity castaways. Ano ang reaksiyon ni Doc Ferdz dito?
"They always say that. My advantage is also a disadvantage for me as well in the sense that I'm already a prime target of everyone!" natatawang saad ni Doc Ferdz.
Sa Survivor kasi, kalimitan, kung sino ang mahusay at malakas, gagawan ng paraan ng kanyang mga kalaban na matanggal.
"So, advantage for me because I'm exposed to these environment; the mosquitoes, the harsh conditions, sanay ako doon. Maganda for me 'coz I can survive. But for them [other castaways], target ka, target ka."
May nadiskubre pa ba siya while on the island?
"Personally sa sarili ko, yes," sagot ni Doc Ferdz. "Kaya ko palang mabuhay nang nagugutom. Matakaw ako, e, malakas akong kumain. Sa shoot [ng Born To Be Wild] kasi, kapag medyo nagugutom na, tigil muna, kain muna. Because you need the strength and the energy. So, 'yon, kaya ko pala magtagal ng gutom.
"And also, I realized, at the end of the day, what you only need is shelter, food and water, and clothing. Yun lang yung pinaka-basic. Kasi ang dami nating problema when we're in the city—yung trabaho mo, the luxuries and all that. And you realize na when you're in the island, you don't really need them to survive. What you need is [food, shelter and clothing] and samahan ko na siyempre ng kasama. Yung mga kasama mo to really survive kasi mabubuwang ka naman dun.
"So, I think, that thought, enough na for me to look back after all these is over and the sun has settled already and the dust has settled already, maiisip mo, 'Oh, I was there, I was able to experience all those challenges and we were able to survive.' So, that's just it."
Thirty-six days sila sa isla.
"Yeah, and I had fun!" bulalas niya. "Hindi ako nagsisisi na sumali ako, although napakahirap naman talaga. At, I made friends and you went through the same experience altogether. Yun 'yon, e. Na may pinagdaanan kayong experience na lahat kayo, kayo lang magkakaintindihan, that's something. And that you will remember forever. So, yeah, I'm glad I was able to join."
IF HE WINS... Umaasa ba siyang manalo?
"Everyone expects to win," sagot ni Doc Ferdz. "I joined because I want to win. I joined because I wanted to experience all these and to win it. Otherwise, kung magpapa-cute lang ako and if it's for the challenges, I can do it in my show.
Dagdag niya, "And this is a different game, it's a different environment. So, ibang play ang dapat at kailangan, mas iba. So, yeah, if you'll ask me if I wanna win, definitely!"
Ano ang gagawin ni Doc Ferdz sa prize money na tatlong milyong piso kung siya ang magwawagi?
"I promised my mom na I would give her this gift and...I want to give her a new house," sagot ng celebrity veterinarian.
Malamang daw ay sa hometown nila sa Canlubang, Laguna niya ibili ng bahay ang ina niyang biyuda na.
"She's kinda old already, so I want to buy her her own house, yung kanya, in Canlubang or anywhere she wants. You know, where she can entertain yung mga bibisita sa kanya."
Ang buong prize money niya ay ibibili niya ng bahay?
"Hindi naman, siyempre I wanna enjoy it. But meron na naman tayong konting naipon, pandagdag," sabi niya.
Para sa kanyang sarili, ano naman ang plano niya?
"Travel, vacation...'coz I love travelling. Perfect nga yung show ko sa akin 'coz I've been to probably the most beautiful places in the Philippines, na I will never be able to afford to go to, magbabayad ka lang, yung oras mo, yung trabaho mo at the same time. Every week I go out and travel and experience all these things. So that alone, I was already blessed. But then, madami pang... Ito lang yung iniikutan ko, e, Pilipinas lang, e."
Although nakapunta na rin daw siya sa ibang lugar tulad ng Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, at South Africa, marami pa raw siyang gustong mapuntahan.
"I like travelling and visiting other countries," sambit ni Doc Ferdz.
